The SG’s welcome

Dear delegates, advisors, mentors, guests, and visitors,

It is my pleasure and honor to welcome you to the Gimnazija Bezigrad Model UN Conference of I am delighted to have the opportunity to work as the Secretary-General, along with the secretariat, presidency, chairs, staff, and mentors to organize the GimBMUN VII conference.

Model UN is a promising platform that encourages eager students to learn about and take a step towards diplomatic careers and participate in international discussions concerning global affairs and geopolitical states. It is so important that this initiative be fostered and pursued further to motivate new generations of creative thinkers, critical thinkers, and empathic thinkers who can make a positive change in the world.

Ensuring Peace over Water is our overarching theme and will be the common thread across all the committees and other conference events. We would like to remind the delegates of the importance water plays in our society and the political world, and how it can drive different motives: be a peace and cooperation initiator, or a source of conflict. Often forgotten, the right to access safe and clean drinking water and sanitation is recognized as a human right by the UN and is a critical part of all communities and industries across the world: agriculture, energy production, healthcare, tourism, technology, etc. It is the backbone of the systems that keep our world afloat and is, therefore, key to preserving peace and initiating sustainable development.

The joint burden that environmental and sociopolitical tensions have placed on water security has especially stressed vulnerable communities and international cooperation initiatives. This is what we wish to highlight at our conference, and institute discussions that will take delegates worldwide, from the conflicts over waters in the Himalayas to the disputes over dams in the Nile basin.

This topic was specifically chosen as Slovenia has a long history of showing dedication to the preservation and safeguarding of water. Slovenia has shown its loyalty to this initiative by contributing a clause ensuring safe drinking water as a fundamental right of all citizens to its constitution, hosting conventions focusing on water cooperation, being a spokesperson for the vitality of freshwater sources, and developing water diplomacy as an integral part of its national and foreign policy.

To prepare a truly rounded, cross-cultural experience, our conference will also allow the opportunity for delegates to meet new people, enjoy the beautiful city of Ljubljana, and have fun outside of the committee sessions. We hope to offer an unforgettable and invaluable experience to those joining us, and on behalf of our team, we hope to see you in January 2026 and welcome you to GimBMUN VII!

Sincerely,

Ana Pšenicnik, Secretary General
